It’s meant to be the most wonderful time of the year. But for many, Christmas (not to mention the weeks leading up to it) can be an exhausting, stressful, and unavoidably expensive experience. The list of people to buy presents for seems to get longer each year, and it’s not as if the latest must-have gadgets, fragrances or designer labels are getting any more affordable.
With that in mind, here are some tips on how to give thoughtful gifts to your friends and family, without breaking the bank.
- Never underestimate nostalgia. Everyone loves a trip down memory lane, and giving a present like this shows you have given a lot of consideration to the recipient. Whether it’s an old Nintendo game, their favourite film as a child, or even just a framed photo of the good old days, let the past be your inspiration.
- Do it yourself. Knitting, arts and crafts, painting, pottery, you name it; homemade gifts have been all the rage for a while now. If you’re not great with your hands, then share memories with a simple scrapbook, photo album, or travel journal.
- Sweet charity. If you’re making charitable donations in lieu of gifts, you can still make this gesture a personal one. Find out what the recipient is passionate about, and give to that cause. For example, if they are an animal lover, sponsor a pet shelter or make a small donation to an endangered species sanctuary.
